Paintings inspired by the 'hysteric' patient of the Parisian 19th century neurologist Dr Charcot. Augustine was admitted to his hospital aged 15 and hypnotised at weekly public lectures. His ideas came under fierce criticism after his death.

Colette series
A friend of Colette's introduced me to her story. A talented artist and poet, her life became chaotic with mental health admissions. I painted my response to her biography written by her Father.

Bryan Charnley series
Bryan at Art School [2022]
Bryan attended art school but the spectre of impending schizophrenia was hanging over him. Later in life he would experiment with his medication and paint self portraits showing his suffering. His brother James has written a fascinating biography and more information can be found on his website.

Bryan's legacy was to leave an invaluable archive of paintings and journals which I accessed at the Wellcome Institute London. A gift donated by his twin brother James and an invaluable insight into Bryan's mind.
